Orthotics are orthopedic devices that are used to modify foot function and are designed to and support various biomechanical foot disorders. Some orthotics are simple, commercially-made devices, such as insoles for shoes that are sold over the counter in drug stores or other retail establishments.
The most effective orthotics, however, are custom-made devices that are designed to meet the specific needs of each individual. For many years, custom orthotics were created using an impression of the foot called a 'foam cast', which duplicates any misalignments in foot structure. Although this is still frequently used, new advances in technology, called the GaitScan, allow us to more accurately diagnose and create custom orthotics, thinner and better than ever before.
The finished orthotic is placed in the patient's shoe to support the foot and eliminate abnormal foot biomechanics by keeping the foot properly aligned.

How do we assess your feet?
When you make an appointment for your orthotic assessment, Dr. Vanderleest will have you walk over the GaitScan plate (see picture above), recording your foot pressure. The information is interpreted with software on the laptop and allows us to see your personal foot problems.
- Falling arches
- Excess pressure spots
- High arches
- Predicts future problem spots that may not be currently painful
Dr. Vanderleest will interpret your results and discuss the appropriate orthotic intervention. In some cases, orthotics are not necessary, however, usually 80% of the population can benefit from orthotic balance of their feet.
